FUJIAN BLUE / Jin bu hui huang
China 2007, Dir.: Robin Weng Shouming, 90 min
This equally pin-sharp and laconic feature, located in the southeastern province Fujian (notorious form being the „golden triangle of human trafficking“), examining the state of modern China. It shows the impact of the West and why and how so many young Chinese pay to have themselves smuggled in containers abroad. The social and economic reasons for the exodus won’t surprise, but the film brings them alive in the aesthetics of the so called Taiwan New Cinema. This is not a film seeking resolution, but a snapshot of life.
